1. What type of wooden barrels are usually used to age wine?

Oak. The trees are usually at least 60 years old before the grain is tight enough to be used as a barrel. One tree can make between one and three barrels.

2. What is the most common grape used in winemaking across the world?

Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in almost all wine regions of the world and is a hardy vine. It became more widespread in the 1800s to help rebuild vineyards in Europe that had been ravaged by pests. 

3. Which US state consumes the most wine (by volume)?

California consumes the most wine and also produces almost 85% of the total US wine supply with over 4,500 wineries calling it home.

4. What is the name of the largest wine bottle, which holds a massive 30 liters of wine?

Midas or Melchizedek is the equivalent of 40 standard bottles or 200 servings!

5. Approximately how many grapes go into a bottle of wine?

600-800 grapes.

6. What is the difference between Champagne and sparkling wine?

There is no difference – the term Champagne is only applied to sparkling wines that have been produced in the Champagne region of France.

7. Does red wine become darker or lighter over time?

Lighter. White wine, in contrast, becomes darker as it ages.

8. The French region of Provence is famous for which wine?

Rosé (it’s around 75% of the region’s wine production).
