Women and children have faced overwhelming challenges recently, from grappling with a pandemic to natural disasters to childcare fiascos—supporting one another is more important than ever. Join us in giving back to elevate those in need.
Our Partnership With World Central Kitchen
For our holiday collection, we’ve partnered with World Central Kitchen to feed those in need in the United States. World Central Kitchen (WCK) is an organization that “uses the power of food to nourish communities and strengthen economies in times of crisis and beyond.” WCK is a team of food first responders who mobilize with the urgency of now to get meals to those who need them most.
Donations from the Peace, Love & Joy release will support WCK Direct, a text-to-order program that addresses rises in food insecurity, the struggling restaurant industry, and increased strain on the emergency food system.
The U.S. is facing increasing levels of food insecurity because of the COVID-19 pandemic. About 38.3 million people lived in food-insecure households in 2020, and researchers at Northwestern University estimate that food insecurity has almost doubled as a result of the economic crisis brought on by the pandemic. Restaurant industry sales were down $240 billion from expected levels in 2020. With many people out of work and food insecurity rising, the emergency food system is strained as individuals and families search for access to affordable, healthy foods. The Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development has said that “The novel coronavirus pandemic has had an immediate effect on food and nutrition security, leading to the most widespread increase in need for food assistance in modern history.”
World Central Kitchen and its community partners identify households in need that may be eligible for assistance and enroll them in the WCK Direct program. Once enrolled, households can order meals for pickup or delivery once per day from one of three participating restaurants nearest to them in New York City, Chicago, Oakland, Los Angeles, or Washington DC.
The WCK Direct program “uses technology to enable households to order meals directly from participating restaurants for delivery or pickup. WCK Direct gives people the flexibility and convenience to order meals on their own schedules and addresses challenges relating to overwhelming demand at community food distribution sites.”
At Teneral Cellars, we believe in elevating women and minorities in the wine and food industry, which is why we sought out a collaboration with WCK. The restaurants WCK works with are majority women and minority owned, and we’ll be donating $10 from every Peace, Love & Joy collection sold to WCK Direct so they can use the power of food to nourish those most in need.
The Peace, Love & Joy Collection
The Peace, Love & Joy Collection features three wines to satisfy a variety of preferences and pair perfectly with your holiday gatherings. We take pride in producing wines of elegance and finesse that stand alone with or without food. Our holiday collection includes a 2019 Chardonnay from Monterey, a 2018 Syrah from the Fair Play AVA in El Dorado County, and a 2020 Grenache from El Dorado County. As an optional fourth bottle, we’re also offering a limited edition Gratitude Red Blend—a bold and full-bodied wine that’s perfect for the season. We’ve only produced 50 cases of this special wine so stock up before it's gone!
Recommended recipes and and pairing suggestions for Peace, Love & Joy were created by our featured collaborator, Chef Stacey Poon-Kinney, and from Master Sommelier Jill Zimorski, we present the tasting notes for the collection:
2019 Chardonnay, Monterey
Zippy acidity leads, followed by a mouth-filling, round texture in this clean, fresh Chardonnay. Bright fruit notes of Meyer lemon, Asian pear, yellow apple, and quince are matched with cream and a soft mineral finish.
2020 Grenache, El Dorado County
Spiced fruit and rich chocolate notes are primary, leading to flavors of wild herbs and roasted plum. Firm but supple tannins give a chewy mouthfeel leading to a long, fruit-laden finish.
2018 Syrah, Fair Play AVA, El Dorado County
This wine has an inky dark color and flavors of deep black fruit, violet, black olive matched with a woodsy, smoky aroma. The voluptuous texture makes for a hedonistic drink now, but this wine will continue to develop for years to come.
Optional Add-On: Limited Edition 2018 Gratitude Red Blend, El Dorado County
A dark, powerful red blend features Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, and is loaded with plummy flavors of stewed, dark berries, and dusty cocoa. Sweet baking spices and vanilla from new oak are prominent but well integrated.
